Here's a view that greets travellers and Pilgrims on the great South road the Romans built to Canterbury.

It's a sight that is still recognisable 800 years later.

Few cities in Britain have this timeless quality. Maybe its the warm evening light on the rich stone of the castle and cathedral. Perhaps its the string shadows cast by the setting winter sun.

Artists through the ages from Turner to the impressionists have stood and gazed at this lovely city.

It was at the start of my attempt to circumnavigate the country on my bike and I realised how much I'm going to live what Britain had to offer.
